Historical Significance of US Independence Day

When 13 colonies declared war with the British rule, the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, which is now memorialized as Independence Day. The Declaration was primarily written by Thomas Jefferson, asserting the inherent rights of human beings and laying foundations for an entirely new country based on liberty, democracy and self-government. In 1776 a committee of five, including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston, was appointed by the Continental Congress to draft a formal declaration. Jefferson’s eloquent prose captured the spirit of the day and expressed the colonies’ problems along with their entitlement to freedom.

On 2 July 1776, the Continental Congress voted unanimously for independence. Two days later they issued the Declaration of Independence, when John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed the declaration to prove the unity of the American colonies, hence, freeing the Americans from the British Rule.
