A visitors guide to the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge plays a vital role in New York’s transport system as it connects Manhattan with the Brooklyn borough. This in turn allows thousands of people to go from one side of the bay to the other side every day either by metro, foot, bike, or car. Other than its functionality, it is one of the topmost tourist attractions in New York, and walking across it remains one of the best things to do in New York. Let us delve into the world of Brooklyn Bridge and find out what makes it so special.

History

The plans to connect Manhattan and Brooklyn borough date back to the 1800s when the only way to cross the East River was through a ferry. However, the construction on the Bridge started late in 1867 and John Augustus Roebling was the main engineer on the project. He proposed to build the largest suspension Bridge in the world at the time. Roebling died early because of a fatal injury and his job was undertaken by his son Washington Roebling.

The construction of the Bridge started in 1870 and it was made open to the public in 1883 by Roebling’s widow as the son also died during the construction. It was a great technological marvel for its time and was celebrated hugely. Since the 19th century, the Bridge has been upgraded and when you walk across the Bridge you will be able to appreciate the sweat and hard work put into its construction.

Facts

  • The Brooklyn Bridge is 1833.7 meters long, 25.9 meters wide and 82.9 meters high
  • Although there was previously a toll to be paid to cross the Bridge, it is now completely free to cross, and no entrance fee is required to cross the Brooklyn Bridge.

How to get there

The easiest and the most convenient way to get there is through the yellow taxi. However, if you are interested in getting to see fun places to visit you can take public transport as well.

To get to Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn Side, take metro line A or C, and stop at High Street – Brooklyn Bridge Station. It is just a short walk from here to the start of the Bridge. However, before you do begin your walk do not miss out on the East River and relax there for a bit. If you wish to walk the opposite way from Manhattan to Brooklyn, take lines 4,5, or 6 to Brooklyn Bridge – City Hall Station. Consider buying the MetroCard as it will save you some money on public transport.

What to see

You can expect a lot of great views from walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. You can witness the Statue of Liberty in the far distance, the effervescent East River with its boats, and hundreds of towering skyscrapers in Manhattan.

Other than the views you can witness the Bridge itself. You can stop at the shore and look to find the right angle to take photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge. Once you are on the bridge, take your time to enjoy its beauty, and do not rush. Make sure you notice the fine details and read the display that showcases the history of the Bridge.

Crossing the Bridge

There are many options available for you to cross the Bridge. The number one option is walking. It will give you plenty of time to properly absorb the atmosphere and take as many pictures as you want. Just be mindful of the weather and explore the Bridge on foot. Make sure you pay enough attention to the surroundings as it is a busy place with cyclists and pedestrians all around. Do not step into the bake line as it can be very dangerous.

You can even rent a bike to explore the Brooklyn Bridge. This option might not provide you with the same opportunities to take photographs but if you intend to just explore the bridge then it is a sure way for you to go. The final option to cross the Bridge is to drive across it with a car or take a cab to get across the Bridge.
