08. New Orleans

In the southeast of the U.S. state of Louisiana, New Orleans is a consolidated city-parish along the Mississippi River. It is sometimes referred to as the Big Easy or NOLA. According to the 2020 U.S. census, the city has 383,997 residents, making it the most populated in Louisiana and the French Louisiana area, the third most populous in the Deep South, and the twelfth most populous in the Southeast. As a major port, New Orleans is considered an economic and commercial hub for the greater Gulf Coast region of the United States.

New Orleans was the capital of French Louisiana until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 when it was acquired by the United States. The city was founded by French colonists in 1718. New Orleans was the most populous city in the American South from the antebellum period until the end of World War II, and it ranked third in terms of population in the US in 1840[17]. Due to its frequent rainfall, low elevation, inadequate natural drainage, and proximity to several bodies of water, the city has historically been extremely prone to flooding. State and federal authorities have erected a complicated system of levees and drainage pumps to protect the metropolis.
